Mom jeans get a bad rap. Often conjuring images of an unflattering fit and out-of-style colors and styles, mom jeans are the Crocs of the jeans world. But this season, mom jeans are back — and more trendy than ever. I actually love the fit of mom jeans — a higher, fitted waist (looser through the hips and thigh), and ankle-grazing length. For those with an hourglass shape, they can be incredibly flattering. But they also are fun to try for a trendy summer jean. In fact, they are replacing boyfriend denim as the jean style of the summer. Here’s how I styled mine for a fun Saturday of shopping.

The Outfit

These Free People jeans are the epitome of mom jean ease. Incredibly comfortable, and fabulous with a slimmer top, these jeans look equally fabulous with a cold-shoulder top or trendy tee. I opted for a classic white tee by Splendid, topped with a rosy cropped faux leather jacket from BlankNYC. A cropped jacket or top is the perfect match for mom jeans because it shoes off your slim waist. That’s why it’s vital to avoid a voluminous top with mom jeans — it’s imperative to define your waist and not lose your shape!

The Accessories

I love to have fun with accessories, and could these Marc Fisher lace-up sandals be any cuter? The fun color and fringe tassels are a win-win for me. Plus, the addition of a colorful printed bag is unexpected and fresh for spring. But for me, the “it” accessory piece of this look is the fun choker necklace, adding an unexpected neck piece to the vintage-meets-modern look. Layer is up with more necklaces to create a global vibe. I also adore these blush sunglasses, which help pop the rosy color of the moto jacket.

Leave your mom jeans prejudice at the door — this season they are a hip jean for all the cool girls, moms included!
