Behind the Scenes: New & Now

An insider’s look at the spring New & Now fashion show!

Lights, camera, fashion! Each season, we bring a unique runway fashion show to some of our stores throughout the country. I am lucky enough to not only host this show in several cities but I also have the privilege of styling the show in a few stores as well. This season, I want to take you behind the scenes of the New & Now show that was held earlier this month at Younkers in Valley West Mall in Des Moines, Iowa. Here’s a look at what goes in to bringing this fabulous fashion show to life.

Most New & Now fashion shows are held on Saturday mornings, which means the two-person styling team arrives at the store the Wednesday before the show to begin the preparation process. On the first day, we pull looks for the show — create about 60 unique outfits that will sashay down the runway. Next, we add coordinating accessories — shoes, jewelry and handbags. By Friday, it’s all about prepping the clothing and accessories by steaming the clothing (shown here), taping up the shoes and removing all tags from the jewelry. It’s a grueling few days, but a lot of fun!

The night before the show, the stage is set and chairs are arranged for the following day’s festivities.

Once all the clothing is steamed and accessories are prepped, we “girl” the show, meaning we arrange all the clothing on racks by model. That way, each model has her own rack and knows which outfits go in what order.

Here I am transitioning from stylist to host! Sharing a Starbucks green tea and a smile with our DJ Sweetlife. It’s almost show time!

Each model comes with her hair and makeup ready — but the posh cosmetics counters at each store always add a fresh lipstick for the girls. For this Younkers show, Lancome showed off their favorite spring lip tone.

Minutes before the show starts, our models are prepped and ready to walk the runway.

I took a moment to share a photo of my awesome shoes on Instagram. Who else is swooning over these pretty in pink sandals by Nine West?

We love the cold-shoulder trend this season, and this model is working it! (And how about that fun floral bag by Coach and those cute leggings?)

Ending the show on a high note, in our social best.

Post-show, all of the looks that walked the runway (like this Max Studio Edit dress) are placed on special racks in center aisles so guests can easily find their favorites. And we applaud another show well done!
