We live in such a trend-forward society that sometimes the word “classic” can be misconstrued as dated or traditional. But the truth is, classics are classics for a reason. In fact, they also tend to be the best investment pieces you can purchase each season, as they will last far beyond the latest and greatest “must have.” For me, the shirt dress is absolutely one of those classic pieces that never goes out of style. Whether it’s a simple white linen shirt dress, or one that’s fully popped with fun florals, stripes or a bold color, the shirt dress created a universally flattering shape that women covet. No wonder the shirt dress is still a darling of designers worldwide. Here’s a look at one of my favorites — for right now, and years to come.
Adrianna Papell is one of my favorite dress designers, thanks to her classics with a twist–this floral shirt dress is no exception. A stunning watercolor print, light as air fabric, just above-the-knee length, crisp collar, and perfect waist-cinching buttons create one spectacular shirt dress. Women with larger busts often tell me they struggle with shirt dresses because of gaping buttons. This is a real issue, but luckily there is a solution. Buy the dress in a size that fits well over your bust line, then if the waist is too big, simply bring it to the tailor to have the waist cinched in a bit. It’s an easy fix that will leave you with the perfect fit.
Since a shirt dress is so easy to transition from the workplace to nighttime activities, I kept the accessories neutral and flirty yet sophisticated. A mini Coach satchel in a light cream, black suede Michael Kors sandals, a cute Anne Klein watch and bangle stack and a pop of color with pink Erica Lyons jeweled hoops give this look everything it needs to stay timeless and chic.
